Germany is the focus of our exhibitions in both the London and Hong Kong galleries this autumn. Currently in the London gallery, Dusseldorf Photography: Bernd and Hilla Becher and Beyond presents a major survey of photography originating from the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf after 1976. Opening at Ben Brown Fine Arts Hong Kong on 15 September is Aspects of German Art (Part 1), a curated exhibition bringing together a selection of Germany¡¯s most eminent artists of the 19th and 20th Centuries.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Shanghai Postcard (2014) by Vik Muniz will be a centrepiece of our stand at the fair. This work is part of the ongoing series, Postcards from Nowhere, featuring large-scale colour photographs based on iconic landmarks around the world. Muniz creates these images using scraps of postcards, which once collaged together suggest a tactile, impastoed surface. His distinctive technique gives a delicate impression of the iconic Shanghai skyline, a nod to the second stop of his travelling retrospective Pictures of Anything, the artist¡¯s first solo exhibition in China, held at the Long Museum West Bund in Shanghai last year.
Israeli artist, designer, sculptor and architect Ron Arad is known for obfuscating the boundaries between art and design. In Rod Gomli (2009), one of Arad¡¯s striking sculptural pieces, the artist continues his ever-evolving reinvention of the chair. The sculpture is based on the human figure, featuring a negative impression of an invisible sitter, the ¡®everyman¡¯. Composed of polished stainless steel and bronze rods the piece has a jewel-like quality intensified by the shimmer of light as the weighted sculpture rocks.
Beijing-based Xu Bing is widely regarded for his printmaking skills and installations, as well as his creative artistic use of language, words, and text and how they have affected our understanding of the world. Xu¡¯s Square Word Calligraphy by Khalil Gibran (2008) synergizes Western and Chinese culture by transcribing English words into Chinese block text, demonstrating the nuances of linguistics in different transnational contexts.
Works on canvas include Tower (PC0812) (2008) by one of the UK¡¯s leading contemporary painters, Tony Bevan. In this abstract architectural work, the repetition of structural elements is inspired by random assemblages of objects that the artist finds in his studio. Composed of stark lines from mixed pigment and charcoal, Bevan effectively uses architecture and interiors in order to lead his viewer to 'the imaginative space of painting' in which both the art and the viewer can exist.
