Hon Te Ururoa Flavell is a descendant of the central North Island tribe, Ngāti Rangiwewehi and Northland tribe, Ngāpuhi.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Māori Studies and Anthropology) from the University of Auckland, a Master of Arts (Māori) from the University of Waikato and is a former student of Te Panekiretanga o Te Reo (Institute of Excellence in Māori Language).
He was first elected to Parliament as a Māori Party MP for the central North Island electorate of Waiariki in September 2005. In July 2013, he became the Co-Leader of the Māori Party.
After the 2014 General Election and the signing of a Relationship Accord with the National-led Government, Mr Flavell was appointed Minister for Māori Development, Minister for Whānau Ora and the Associate Minister of Economic Development.
As Minister for Māori Development, Mr Flavell controls a significantly broad portfolio, responsible for supporting Māori success in a wide range of areas, including land development, Treaty of Waitangi matters, education, tourism, sport and business. He is a staunch advocate of reviving New Zealand¡¯s indigenous language – te reo Māori.
As Associate Minister for Economic Development, Mr Flavell is focussed on regional development and driving export-growth for New Zealand, particularly through Māori products and services. Māori own significant assets concentrated in the primary sectors including agriculture, fisheries and forestry. Māori businesses are also flourishing in the ICT, food and beverage and services sectors. Mr Flavell champions Māori businesses, supplying unique products to international markets and supplying unique tourism services to New Zealand¡¯s international visitors.
