Organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and title-sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (BOCHK), the BOCHK Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations 2017 will be launched from Victoria Harbour, as well as from the top of a number of skyscrapers on Hong Kong Island on New Years Eve (31 December). The Countdown Celebrations will be the HKTBs first celebratory event for the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
This year, the show will be extended from 8 to 10 minutes and will feature new patterns symbolising stars, butterflies and a gun salute. For the first time, the lighting effects will be launched from the harbour, and a street party will be held in Tsim Sha Tsui before the show to add to the ambience.
HKTB Chairman Dr Peter Lam said: The Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations have already become a landmark event. Each year, it not only attracts hundreds of thousands of viewers, but also generates massive coverage in international media. This year, we will expand the scale of the celebrations by introducing a brand new street party, extending the show from 8 to 10 minutes, and launching lighting effects for the first time
from the harbour. As in previous years, the HKTB will broadcast the event live via satellite to major media organisations and arrange a live broadcast on social media and video platform to allow people around the world to experience the exciting New Year atmosphere in Hong Kong.
Mrs Ann Kung, Deputy Chief Executive of Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (BOCHK), which is the title sponsor of the Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations 2017, said, We are honoured and privileged to be the title sponsor of this years New Year Countdown Celebrations. Year 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of Hong Kongs return to the Motherland, as well as the centenary of the establishment of Bank of China in Hong Kong. This Countdown Celebrations will help unveil the spectacular opening of our series of centenary celebrations. We are deeply rooted in Hong Kong and are committed to serving and contributing to Hong Kong by strengthening its position as an international financial centre and maintaining its long-term prosperity and stability. To make the Countdown Celebrations more meaningful, BOCHK will cooperate with a non-profit organisation to invite some teenagers as well as their family members to join the activities. Special light patterns will also be displayed in Bank of China Tower for the celebrations. In addition, BOCHK will organise a pyromusical photo and short film competition. All Hong Kong citizens are welcome to join to capture the most splendid moment of the pyromusical.
Brand New Street Party
On New Years Eve, the HKTB will host a street party, starting from 10:00pm at the Tsim Sha Tsui Pier (near Star House), at which a number of artists will perform. Members of the public will get a chance to make a wish on a shooting star when the pyrotechnic shooting stars are launched every 15 minutes from 11:00pm onwards from the rooftops of six participating buildings on Hong Kong Island: Cheung Kong Center, CITIC Tower, Harbour Centre, Harcourt House, Queensway Government Offices and Revenue Tower.
Lighting Effects after the Show
The show will last for approximately 10 minutes and will include many elements, such as fireworks, pyrotechnics, music and a light show. After that, special lighting effects, based on the concept of northern lights, will light up the Victoria Harbour, creating a perfect conclusion to the show.
Best Vantage Points
On New Years Eve, the BOCHK Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations can be viewed from a number of spots in Hong Kong and Kowloon. The best vantage points in Tsim Sha Tsui are the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Open Piazza.
