A party atmosphere, auspicious shooting stars, spectacular fireworks and lighting effects, and cheers from both sides of the harbour will make for a great start to 2017!
Organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and title-sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (BOCHK), the BOCHK Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations 2017 will be the HKTBs first celebratory event commemorating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
On New Years Eve (31 December), fireworks will be launched from Victoria Harbour and the top of a number of skyscrapers on Hong Kong Island. This year, the show will be extended from 8 to 10 minutes and will feature new patterns of stars and butterflies. To mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, the numeral 20 will adorn the sky midway in the show, alongside pyrotechnics launched just above the harbour to mimic the effect of a 20-gun salute.
The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre will continue be the focal point of the show. For the first time, special lighting effects, including a series based on the concept of northern lights at the end of the show, will be showcased concurrently with fireworks and pyrotechnics for optimal visual impact.
Brand-new street party
To hike up the ambience before the show, the HKTB has arranged a street party near Star House in Tsim Sha Tsui at 10pm with pop singers and bands, including Supper Moment, Phil Lam, Kandy Wong of Sugar Club, Daniel Chau, Auston Lam, Kayee Tam, Hana Tam, MastaMic and Ally Tse.
Make a wish on a shooting star
Members of the public will get a chance to make a wish on a shooting star when pyrotechnic shooting stars in four different colours are launched every 15 minutes from 11:00pm onwards from the rooftops of six participating buildings on Hong Kong Island: Cheung Kong Center, CITIC Tower, Harbour Centre, Harcourt House, Queensway Government Offices and Revenue Tower.
Best vantage points
The BOCHK Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations 2017 can be viewed from a number of spots in Hong Kong and Kowloon. The best vantage points in Tsim Sha Tsui are the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Open Piazza. The best vantage points on Hong Kong Island are the New Central Harbourfront, Central Piers 9 and 10, and Bauhinia Square, in Wanchai.
Live broadcast
The HKTB will broadcast the event live via satellite to major media organisations around the world and arrange live broadcasts on social media and video platforms. In Hong Kong, TVB Jade will broadcast the whole event live.

The show will feature new patterns of stars and butterflies, alongside pyrotechnics launched just above the harbour to mimic the effect of a 20-gun salute to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR. Renowned musician Mr Chiu Tsang-hei has created a re-mix of the theme song adding a solo section played by a sanxian (Chinese lute), giving the show a delightful new touch.
