ART BASEL IN HONG KONG
GALLERIES
Stand 1D16, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
29–31 March, 2019
Pearl Lam Galleries¡¯ stand in the prestigious Galleries sector of the show will featur
artworks by important
international artists including American artist Robert Motherwell (b. 1915–d. 1991); British artists Antony
Micallef (b. 1975) and Peter Peri (b. 1971); Brazilian artist José Patrício (b. 1960); Chinese artists Su Xiaobai
(b. 1949) and Zhu Jinshi (b. 1954); and Korean artists Chun Kwang Young (b. 1944) and Hoon Kwak (b.
1941). The presentation will also include works by Leonardo Drew (b. 1961) and Zhou Yangming (b. 1971),
whose solo exhibitions with the Galleries will be on view concurrently.
Following his recent dual-space exhibition at both of Pearl Lam Galleries¡¯ Hong Kong galleries, one of Robert
Motherwell¡¯s paintings
will be presented at the stand. As the youngest member and unofficial spokesman of
the Abstract Expressionists, the first internationally influential American art movement, Motherwell¡¯s
profound contribution to contemporary art history situates him as a notable yet often under-recognized
figure in the Western canon.
The Galleries will also exhibit three new pieces by Antony Micallef that feature the artist¡¯s visually charged
figures, which explore relationships between artistic intent, representation, and emotional expression.
Awarded the second place prize by the BP Portrait Award in 2000, Micallef has received international
acknowledgement for his unique use of the impasto technique, which pushes paint to its extreme and blurs
viewers¡¯ perceptions of his paintings and sculptures.
A canvas piece by Peter Peri marks another highlight of the Galleries¡¯ presentation, representing the artist¡¯s
fascination with the intersection of lines to form a cross and their ability to become a paradoxical point at
which unity and division coexist. Renowned art critic Martin Herbert states, ¡°Peri¡¯s artworks suggest, but
never reduce themselves to an externalized entity, an embodied intelligence that stands in confrontation
with the viewer, even when the work is seemingly near-abstract.¡±
New works by Chinese artists Su Xiaobai and Zhu Jinshi will also be exhibited at the stand. These artists¡¯
most recent pieces continue to further their artistic practices. By applying colours on linen; polishing layers
of lacquer; and introducing subtle variations of light, shadows, textures, and movement into the artworks,
Su has elevated his materials from something with a practical use to embody a meditative state. Zhu¡¯s
approach to abstraction is linked to Chinese ink painting, where the mind must be empty and the artist¡¯s
hands connected to heaven, earth, and heart to manifest the work. The artist must be meditative in order to
connect with the canvas and make the strokes in a state of tian di ren, ¡°the ultimate peace in the unity of the
three (heaven, earth and man) in one¡±.
AT THE GALLERIES
LEONARDO DREW solo exhibition
Pearl Lam Galleries, Pedder Building
25 March–27 April, 2019
New York-based sculptor Leonardo Drew will present a selection of newly created two- and threedimensional
works at the Pedder Building. For the past two years, Drew lived in China and immersed
himself in Chinese culture in order to create this profound, site-responsive new body of work. In this
exhibition, Drew formally, materially, and conceptually furthers the visual vocabulary he has pioneered
since the early 1990s. Building upon his interest in non-Western philosophies, Drew¡¯s new sculptures offer
insight into the artist's diverse subjectivities, notably incorporating jagged, gold-plated shards of porcelain
into the picture plane for the first time and developing compositions that appear more geological in their
approach, as if reckoning with a spiritual and physical terrain of profound depth. The exhibition encourages a
debate between the geologic and the modern, calling into question the transformation of matter.
ZHOU YANGMING solo exhibition: ¡°Continuum¡±
Pearl Lam Galleries, HK H Queen¡¯s
25 March–21 April, 2019
Continuum, a solo exhibition of works by Chinese artist Zhou Yangming, will feature a selection of paintings
created from 2007 to 2018. Zhou does not consider individual paintings as representative of a set period of
time; rather, all his paintings and their relationships with one another constitute a singular, temporal
universe. By working with markers, Chinese ink, and acrylic paint in a disciplined manner, Zhou negotiates
the formal structure of painting through an intricate system of vertical and horizontal lines as well as dots.
The subtlety of these lines and dots on his minimal yet meticulous planes documents the artist¡¯s various
states of mind throughout different stages of his meditational practice. The highlight of the exhibition is a
seven-metre-long ink on silk piece, which will hang from the ceiling and extend onto the floor.
